Chelsea are set to receive a significant financial windfall as Romelu Lukaku closes in on a move from Napoli to Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, Fenerbahce and the Serie A outfit are rapidly closing in on an agreement for the 33-year-old Belgian international striker.
Lukaku has reportedly agreed in principle to join the Super Lig club, with negotiations progressing towards a transfer fee of around £9 million to £10 million (€10m) to finalize the transaction.
Chelsea could receive £4m from Lukaku transfer
Should the transfer go through at the discussed valuation, Chelsea stand to gain directly from the deal due to contractual terms negotiated during Lukaku’s permanent departure to Naples.
When the Blues sanctioned his transfer to Napoli, West London executives successfully inserted a 40 per cent sell-on clause on any future transfer fee generated by the forward.
As a result of this clause, Chelsea are positioned to receive up to £4 million without needing to deploy further negotiating capital.
For the Premier League side, capitalizing on a sell-on clause for an out-of-favour former player provides welcome, unexpected revenue that can be immediately reinvested or used to strengthen their financial standing under Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Romelu Lukaku’s time at Chelsea
The financial return represents a late silver lining on what proved to be a difficult second spell for Lukaku at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea originally re-signed the Belgian striker from Inter Milan for a club-record £97.5 million fee in the summer of 2021, expecting him to serve as the focal point of their frontline.
However, the high-profile return quickly faltered following off-pitch controversy and on-field inconsistency, leading to consecutive Italian loan spells back at Inter Milan and Roma.
He was eventually sold permanently to Napoli, ending a frustrating chapter in West London.
While his tenure on the pitch in London fell short of expectations, his impending move to Turkey ensures Chelsea still derive a late financial benefit from their former record signing.
